PESA with a contract for 62 trains for Romanian railways

On the 30th January this year, an agreement was signed in Bucharest between PESA Bydgoszcz and the Romanian Railway Reform Agency (Autoritatea pentru Reformă Feroviară – ARF). Thanks to this the Polish company will deliver 62 electric multiple units (EMUs*) to the Romanian Railways (Căile Ferate Române – CFR).

The trains will be delivered in 3 lots. They will be used by regional railways (RE-R) in 3 regions: Bucharest, Cluj and Iași. The total net value of the project ranges from PLN 2.9 to 3.72 billion

“Romania still has a lot of work to do when it comes to the renewal of its rolling stock. The Pesa trains will be the first modern vehicals for Romanian Railways in over 20 years. What is equally important for us is that these are the last contracts we have to sign as part of the railway package of the National Recovery Plan, funds for all tasks have already been contracted,”

Sorin-Mihai Grindeanu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania

In December last year, Pesa signed a contract with ARF for the delivery of 20 (+ 9 as an option) Inter-Regio class vehicles. As part of both agreements, the Bydgoszcz-based company will also provide vehicle maintenance services to ARF for 15 years. The agreement allows for the possibility of extending the provision of services for another 15 years. To this end, Pesa, together with the State Railways (CFR Călători), will set up local service centres.

These are not the first agreements implemented in Romania. Between 2012 and 2023, the Bydgoszcz-based company delivered trams to the Romanian market. In total, there are already 37 of them, in Cluj-Napoca, Iași and Craiova. In addition to the Romanian market, PESA delivers its trains to among others, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Ghana. While in Germany, Ukraine and Italy, there are service stations for locally used vehicles. So far, in total, the company has obtained 23 foreign certifications.

PESA is the largest Polish manufacturer of rolling stock, employs almost 4,000 people. A company cooperates with over 1500 companies which in turn, employ a total of tens of thousands workers.

*EMU is an electric multiple unit. Its characteristic feature is the shared passenger compartment along the entire length of the vehicle.
