The Port of Gdansk with a direct container service to the USA

The Port of Gdansk has joined the European ports operating regular, direct container connections with the United States. Thus, it strengthens its position on the map of global logistics, becoming a real alternative to the largest ports in Northern Europe.

Gdansk was included in the transatlantic rotation, strengthening the MSC network between Poland and the US. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest shipowner, has expanded its Albatros service with direct connections from Northern Europe to New York and Charleston, offering full integration of inland waterway and logistics services.

New route and fast delivery times

The first MSC trip in the new rotation departed from Gdansk on August 14. The connection is to operate weekly, and its route includes the following ports: Gdańsk – Bremerhaven – New York – Charleston. The transit time is only 13 days to New York and 17 days to Charleston, which significantly shortens the transport route for Polish cargo heading overseas.

Benefits for Polish trade

This direct connection opens up the possibility of faster and cheaper access to the American market for Polish exporters. Gdansk also gains a chance to handle some volume from Central and Eastern Europe, which so far have been directed mainly to ports in Germany.

Baltic Hub as a regional hub

The service is provided by Baltic Hub, the largest container terminal in the Baltic Sea, with transshipments exceeding 2 million TEU per year. The terminal serves as an important logistics hub, integrating maritime transport with rail and road. Thanks to intramodality, it is becoming a hub for the entire region of Central and Eastern Europe.

Transatlantic trade

Polish’s trade relations with the United States are dominated by exports, which include mainly high-value goods, such as:

  • parts for the automotive and aviation industries,
  • pharmaceuticals, furniture,
  • food.

Energy resources and chemicals are also becoming increasingly important.

The new connection is part of the growing importance of the transatlantic route, where LNG exports from the US and imports of US agricultural products play an increasingly important role.
