Industry description

Electronics and photonics are fields of technology currently perceived as one of the most innovative areas of the economy in Europe, which have revolutionized science and industry in recent decades. These industries, key to the modern economy, have enormous potential for the development of modern technologies and are used in many areas of life, bringing economic, social and environmental benefits.

The observation of global changes and technological progress indicates that microelectronics and photonics will be present in every area of life, and so will be objects networked through IoT and the 5G networks and next generations of mobile technologies already emerging today will require new and reliable security technologies.

Polish companies successfully develop electronic solutions for many areas of the economy requiring high reliability, precision, performance, and broad certification: medicine, defense, space industry, and the entertainment sector, and offer many innovative technologies in these fields, which reflects Poland’s strong integration with the global supply chain as well as high level of innovativeness among Polish companies.

Facts about the Polish Electronics & Photonics sector:

Export value:

Poland produced over 300 million electronic components in 2022. The export value reached approximately EUR 1.8 billion, marking a 15% increase compared to the previous year.

Polish exports of electronics and photonics have shown impressive growth, both in terms of volume and value. It increased from USD 431.69 million in 2012 to USD 510.90 million in 2022.

In 2022, the EMS sector in Poland generated the revenue of approximately €4.5 billion, which is a 10% growth compared to the previous year. This expansion is supported by over 300 EMS companies operating in Poland, employing more than 50,000 people.

The total revenue of the TOP100 Polish electronic components in 2022 was PLN 12.243 billion–an 18.0% increase compared to 2021.

Why Polish professional electronics, microelectronics and photonics sectors is a smart choice?

1. Advanced technological competencies

Polish companies and research institutions are among the European leaders in areas such as:

  • integrated circuit design (ASIC, SoC),
  • high-reliability electronics,
  • embedded systems,
  • optical and photonic sensors,
  • laser and fiber optic technologies.

2. Strong scientific base and access to R&D

Poland has an extensive network of research centers and certification laboratories, including:

  • microelectronics and nanotechnology centers,
  • photonics, spectroscopy, and optoelectronics laboratories,
  • semiconductor technologies, robotics, and automation centers.

3. Specialization in major technology trends

Poland is developing competencies in the most forward-looking sectors:

  • photonics for 5G/6G telecommunications,
  • sensors and optics for AI and IoT,
  • semiconductors for automotive and mobility,
  • electronics for robotics and autonomous systems,
  • medical imaging systems,
  • quantum technologies and quantum photonics.

4. A dynamically growing industrial and startup ecosystem

Poland is home to many innovative companies and clusters, including:

  • photonics clusters,
  • electronics and automation clusters,
  • semiconductor competence centers,
  • deep-tech and hardware startups,
  • technology parks and prototyping laboratories.

This ecosystem fosters rapid product scaling and innovation implementation.

5. A stable European legal and manufacturing environment

Cooperation with Poland means access to EU standards for security, data protection, intellectual property, and supply chains, which is crucial in high-tech industries.

Promotion at international events

In the years 2024-2029, the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development is implementing a Polish Electronics & Photonics Program. The initiative is part of the non-competitive project “Internationalisation of SMEs – Brand HUB”, measure 2.26 of the “European Funds for a Smart Economy 2021–2027” (FENG) program.

The main objective of the Polish Electronics & Photonics Program is to present Polish offer of electronics, microelectronics and photonics products and services to foreign partners and to promote Poland as a country that offers advanced products, technologies and services, offers interesting and innovative solutions, and has the potential to develop in foreign markets. The program is available to Polish companies operating in the field of professional electronics, microelectronics, and photonics that are looking for foreign trade, technological, and investment partners.

The program includes promotional activities aimed at promoting the entire Electronics & Photonics sector and the Polish economy through:

  • organizing information and promotional campaigns.
  • organizing national stands at major international industry trade fairs,
  • preparing a report (e-book) in English containing an analysis of the Polish professional electronics, microelectronics, and photonics sector,
